Yes! The air had a bit of a bite to it, but that didn’t stop our feet from hopping through Redding’s monthly 2nd Saturday ArtHop held on December 11th. Most of the artists’ shows are hosted on the west side of town, but my compass directed me east to Gallery 833 where my eyes were dazzled with the works of Ursula Guderian. Her talent for creating custom jewelry was evident in every nook and cranny of her display. I tried to capture some of her work through my photographs. Take a look…
Some of Ursula’s jewelry inspired work was in the form of wall art. She explained how each frame was carefully chosen in combination with fabric and other mediums. Santa, may I have one?
The artist herself, Ursula (pictured far right), entertained guests during the reception.
You can find Ursula’s beautiful jewelry at The Velvet Loft, The Kimberly Nicole Boutique, Infinite Designs, and by appointment only at Faccia Bella by calling 530.510.3924 – all in Redding, CA.
Did I mention I had the best date in the world with me? I took my youngest son, Tommy (8), who has such a curiosity about him, with me. Halfway into the night he said, “Thanks for taking me to this, Mom. I really like seeing all these things”. Oh, how I love this child!
I digress. Pacific West Graphics Printing & Design hosted a reception for the art students of Enterprise High School where they displayed self portraits out of mat board, old newspapers from the school paper, layers of tea stain or coffee stain, and chalk or graphite. It was so impressive to witness the each student’s piece and see how open and free and artistic they are.

As we walked into Parmer’s Furniture & Design, we received an extra treat as these musicians filled their music throughout the store.
The featured artist was Deborah Farren whose paintings were found in just about each display room.
Deborah talked passionately about her work, her unrestrained work, over the past 2 years. She has been an artist for decades but has only recently felt freed to really express herself and have fun at the same time in her latest works seen here. In the acrylic below, she accomplished the final product by applying many layers of acrylic paint and, at one point, letting one of her layers drip down and dry. It was fun talking with Deborah. Thank you for taking so much time with me, Deborah!!
Tommy and I hopped right next door to Ethan Allen to attend the reception for artist, Linda Garcia, who displayed her photographs. At first glance, they look like paintings but, in fact, are photographs. Linda, too, was very willing to take me around to her pieces and describe to me the what’s, when’s, why’s, and how’s. All of her work was displayed on canvas. Take a look…
Linda took this photograph (below) right in front of the YMCA in Redding. If you know the area, it makes you go….hmmmm. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to talk with Linda and getting another photographer’s perspective.
I just love the atmosphere at Vintner’s Cellar! Here was our #6 stop of the night to see the 12 Wines of Christmas on display by artist, Lisa Davison. This is the 2nd year in a row I have photographed her art at Christmastime and loved both years! Lisa paints her own interpretation of each of the 12 days of Christmas and Vintner’s takes those paintings and turns them into wine labels! Is that not fantastic! You can buy just 1 bottle or you can purchase the entire case of 12…what a fun gift for Christmas! On this ArtHop night, you were able to sample each of the 12 flavors. Too good to be missed!
Our final stop of the night was at the Shasta County Arts Council to see the Holiday Art and Gift Show put on by many local artists. It was getting late and only 2 of the artists were there keeping down the fort. These items were available to purchase right on the spot. It really was neat to see the wide range of goodies offered by the talented people of Redding. Below is “Gramma Joyce” who makes art using many different mediums. Gramma Joyce showed me examples of her wood sculpting/etching, as well as…
…her goose egg art. Gramma Joyce was so warm and such a pleasure to visit with, not to mention a multitalented artist!
I must not forget to mention Mac McMahon of Red Bluff who handcrafts reclaimed wood into functional pieces, such as bowls, vases, containers, etc. Some of his pieces are displayed below. I was able to talk with Mac at the SCAC as well. I wouldn’t mind one of those pieces in my stocking too, Santa!
And so that concluded our ArtHop experience for December 2010! To all the artists, thank you for inspiring me! To all the vendors who hosted an artist this month, thank you for all the goodies (veges, cookies, crackers, dips, wines, etc). Thank you to my Tommy for escorting me to another inspiring night of ArtHop. And, as always, a very special THANK YOU to Adam and Troy who put in many, many hours each month in order to provide Redding with this special taste of culture and experience. Don’t forget to visit Vintner’s Cellar to stock up for your New Year’s celebration! And, to all of you reading this blog, my friends, and family…Happy New Year! Let’s make it memorable!
