2nd Saturday ArtHop ~ December 11, 2010

December 29, 2010

Yes!  The air had a bit of a bite to it, but that didn’t stop our feet from hopping through Redding’s monthly 2nd Saturday ArtHop held on December 11th.  Most of the artists’ shows are hosted on the west side of town, but my compass directed me east to Gallery 833 where my eyes were dazzled with the works of Ursula Guderian.  Her talent for creating custom jewelry was evident in every nook and cranny of her display.  I tried to capture some of her work through my photographs.  Take a look…

Some of Ursula’s jewelry inspired work was in the form of wall art.  She explained how each frame was carefully chosen in combination with fabric and other mediums.  Santa, may I have one?

The artist herself, Ursula (pictured far right), entertained guests during the reception.

You can find Ursula’s beautiful jewelry at The Velvet Loft, The Kimberly Nicole Boutique, Infinite Designs, and by appointment only at Faccia Bella by calling 530.510.3924 – all in Redding, CA.

Did I mention I had the best date in the world with me?  I took my youngest son, Tommy (8), who has such a curiosity about him, with me.  Halfway into the night he said, “Thanks for taking me to this, Mom.  I really like seeing all these things”.  Oh, how I love this child!

I digress.  Pacific West Graphics Printing & Design hosted a reception for the art students of Enterprise High School where they displayed self portraits out of mat board, old newspapers from the school paper, layers of tea stain or coffee stain, and chalk or graphite.  It was so impressive to witness the each student’s piece and see how open and free and artistic they are.

Artist – Keira Belanger, Caged Bird

Artist – Ashley Lewis, Untitled

Artist – Holly Robinson, Red Head

Artist – Danae Jocson, Untitled

Artist – Shawn Chao, Hardworking

As we walked into Parmer’s Furniture & Design, we received an extra treat as these musicians filled their music throughout the store.

The featured artist was Deborah Farren whose paintings were found in just about each display room.

Deborah talked passionately about her work, her unrestrained work, over the past 2 years.  She has been an artist for decades but has only recently felt freed to really express herself and have fun at the same time in her latest works seen here.  In the acrylic below, she accomplished the final product by applying many layers of acrylic paint and, at one point, letting one of her layers drip down and dry.  It was fun talking with Deborah.  Thank you for taking so much time with me, Deborah!!

Tommy and I hopped right next door to Ethan Allen to attend the reception for artist, Linda Garcia, who displayed her photographs.  At first glance, they look like paintings but, in fact, are photographs.  Linda, too, was very willing to take me around to her pieces and describe to me the what’s, when’s, why’s, and how’s.  All of her work was displayed on canvas.  Take a look…

Linda took this photograph (below) right in front of the YMCA in Redding.  If you know the area, it makes you go….hmmmm.  I thoroughly enjoyed getting to talk with Linda and getting another photographer’s perspective.

I just love the atmosphere at Vintner’s Cellar!  Here was our #6 stop of the night to see the 12 Wines of Christmas on display by artist, Lisa Davison.  This is the 2nd year in a row I have photographed her art at Christmastime and loved both years!  Lisa paints her own interpretation of each of the 12 days of Christmas and Vintner’s takes those paintings and turns them into wine labels!  Is that not fantastic!  You can buy just 1 bottle or you can purchase the entire case of 12…what a fun gift for Christmas!  On this ArtHop night, you were able to sample each of the 12 flavors.  Too good to be missed!

Our final stop of the night was at the Shasta County Arts Council to see the Holiday Art and Gift Show put on by many local artists.  It was getting late and only 2 of the artists were there keeping down the fort.  These items were available to purchase right on the spot.  It really was neat to see the wide range of goodies offered by the talented people of Redding.  Below is “Gramma Joyce” who makes art using many different mediums.  Gramma Joyce showed me examples of her wood sculpting/etching, as well as…

…her goose egg art.  Gramma Joyce was so warm and such a pleasure to visit with, not to mention a multitalented artist!

I must not forget to mention Mac McMahon of Red Bluff who handcrafts reclaimed wood into functional pieces, such as bowls, vases, containers, etc.  Some of his pieces are displayed below.  I was able to talk with Mac at the SCAC as well.  I wouldn’t mind one of those pieces in my stocking too, Santa! ;)

And so that concluded our ArtHop experience for December 2010!  To all the artists, thank you for inspiring me!  To all the vendors who hosted an artist this month, thank you for all the goodies (veges, cookies, crackers, dips, wines, etc).   Thank you to my Tommy for escorting me to another inspiring night of ArtHop.  And, as always, a very special THANK YOU to Adam and Troy who put in many, many hours each month in order to provide Redding with this special taste of culture and experience.  Don’t forget to visit Vintner’s Cellar to stock up for your New Year’s celebration!  And, to all of you reading this blog, my friends, and family…Happy New Year!  Let’s make it memorable!

2nd Saturday ArtHop ~ October 9, 2010

October 26, 2010

The 2nd Saturday ArtHop October 9th was a feast for the eyes.  My evening started out at the North Valley Art League where many artists were represented.

ArtHoppers enjoyed their evening as well!

Pastel painting below is called “Innocence” by Jeannie Thurman

Frank Germano calls his ink with wash picture “1906 San Francisco Fire”

My next stop was at the Oregon Street Antique Mall in Redding where many more artists were featured from the Shasta College Art Club.  Various types of mixed media made the show, here in metal.

Live sculpting added a particularly exciting element to the show tonight…very fun to watch!

Chris Unger is the artist responsible for these metal sculptures (shown below).

These are relief paintings in black and white by Richard Laughlin.

This adorable young woman displayed her oil paintings (shown here) and some charcoal work as well.  Let me introduce you to Caitlin Crady.

My hopping took me to Tapas next where I met Dejon Weldon.  She is a painter, a printmaker, and a photographer.  You can visit her web site at www.dejonsvision.com

The Vintage Wine Bar always has such a warm atmosphere, which was perfect to display custom guitars.  James Russell is the talented artist who crafted the acoustic guitars below.  You can visit his site at www.russellguitars.com.

There were electric guitars on display as well that were equally impressive crafted by Jason Schroeder.

Many, many Hoppers came to admire this workmanship of both Jason and Russell.

My last stop was to visit the featured artist of the month, Usana Weaver.  This took me to Parmer’s Furniture & Design where Usana’s paintings were integrated into the beautiful setting of the furniture and accessories about the store.

Here is Usana herself standing in front of 3 of her pieces.  She was such a delight to talk with.  Thank you for being so hospitable Usana!

2nd Saturday ArtHop ~ August 14, 2010

August 30, 2010
Chuck Rehdorf -photographer

Chuck Rehdorf visits Redding this Saturday evening for a reception showcasing his stunning photography. I enjoyed visiting Chuck and talking about our love of Nikon. He comes from Paradise and has such passion for capturing exciting images.

Enjoy!

More of Chuck's work.

The Studio Experience (www.thestudioexperience.com)

Study of Rubens, La Donna Vilata. $25,000, Bev Dearman, Artist. This is an oil painting, far right. Gorgeous!

Shirley Barone is another artist featured here at The Studio Experience in Redding. Shirley has such a wide range to her artistic ability (please see photograph below).

Ester Mapes presents her beautiful pen drawing, Self Portrait II.

Lovely and vivid is how I would describe this next artist, Michelle Young. The 12' x 12' painting at the bottom is called "Red Pansy". The other pieces are 4" x 4" canvas paintings with an assortment of flowers.

Another amazing oil painting by artist, Bev Dearman. This is a study called The Bridge.

Two artists are captured here: Shirley Barone brings us the photograph at the top, Giamo de Tuscany (features her adorable grandson), and photograph at the bottom is by LuAnn McBrayer, Holly.

The Traveling Bohemians

Joseph Aulde is a featured artist of The Traveling Bohemians who held a reception at our 2nd Saturday ArtHop.

Joseph Aulde is an artist who workds in acrylics and watercolors.

Feel free to view this artwork and more in watercolors through the first week of September at Bohemian Art Loft at 3304B Bechelli Lane in Redding.

D’Ann Bourne -artist

This artist is one of my personal favorites! Featured at Parmer's Furniture this fine ArtHop night was D'Ann Bourne. She is a very talented collage artist whose passion is working with texture and abstract forms.

D'Ann's pieces are featured at the Red Bluff Gallery and in Weaverville. She has had her work juried in California, Texas, and Colorado.

One of D'Ann's pieces I so wanted to take home with me! Perhaps I should go for it and invest in this piece. Just beautiful!

Judi Forney -artist

Driftwood at Twilight is my favorite by Judi Forney. The muted colors and the contrast between the wood and the sunset in the background grabbed me.

This is another Judi Forney called Peaceful Harbor. Judi says, "The style of my paintings border between surreal and romantic, but they always represent my unique perspective."

This is Storm Cloud Over Santa Fe, an oil listed for $650, by artist Judi Forney.

Vickie Wolf -photographer

Photographer Vickie Wolf had her first exhibit at Graphic Emporium. She brought such a unique display to this month's 2nd Saturday ArtHop. I was captivated as soon as I walked in the door!

Vickie's 'Our Mind's Eye Studio' draws the onlooker in to experience each piece of "famous landscapes and intricacies of nature" from their own mind's eye.

I was surprised to learn this was Vickie's first exhibit as each piece is such a representation of her passion and to what lengths she goes to in attaining each piece. She has invested a lot of time in each and every one of her photographs. I felt privileged to meet and talk with her this 2nd Saturday ArtHop night.

Hawkman Studios Art Camp students present mixed media.
www.hawkmanstudios.com

Troy Hawkman taught Art Camp over the summer to some of Redding's most creative kids. The students were able to choose 1 of their masterpieces created during camp to display in August's 2nd Saturday ArtHop. Here are some fun examples of what the children created during their week at camp. Enjoy!

More fun Art Camp student work!

The young man who did this pen art is an original. It was great to meet you Cody, keep up the creative artist in you!

Another 2nd Saturday ArtHop in the books!  Thank you Adam and Troy for your continued effort in making this such an enjoyable part of Redding’s social scene!

2nd Saturday Art Hop – June 12, 2010

June 23, 2010

Featured artist Sol Land on the sidewalk of the Discovery Shop on

Park Marina Drive.

Sol gave onlookers a musical demonstration of his metal work of various designs. Using xylophone sticks, he played his own music using the curves and crevices from each of his pieces of work.

The metal work Sol did around a large rock was my personal favorite. Shown here is Sol "playing" the mini stool that seemed to be a crowd favorite.

Another example of Sol's whimsical metal art work.

Amazing kids from The Rocky Point Charter School “Portrait of a Grand Jury”

I was beyond impressed with the display at Ethan Allen Furniture. The young kids from Rocky Point Charter School were given a project that was part civics and part journalism. These young masterminds were all between the ages of 8 and 11. Their well put together articles on 11 Grand Jury members was so impressive, upon initial look, I assumed the "kids" were from a high school. Truly amazing work!

While the Rocky Point Charter students prepared for this project, Journalist Doni Greenberg and Photographer Amy Jensen gave lessons to these students in capturing their subjects on paper and with a camera for a true portraiture of each Grand Juror.

It was interesting to learn so much about each Grand Jury member through these young artists.

Thank you to Ethan Allen Furniture for hosting "Kids These Days" at your store on Park Marina Drive.

Featured artist at Parmer’s Furniture, Barbara Enochian.  Visit her work and list of classes at www.barbaraenochian.com

Barbara Enochian's acrylic and collage work at Parmer's furniture caught my attention. Pictured here is Memories of Spain and was my favorite! Barbara is a well skilled artist having studied as an Art History Major at UC Berkeley. She continued her studies here in the North State for many years and has emerged as an artist specializing particularly in watercolors, acrylics, and collage.

Here is another beautiful collage piece by Barabara called Rome. To view a slide show of her work and to get information about art classes, go to www.barbaraenochian.com.

Troy Hawkins and Elliott Rogers reception at Graphic Emporium

Troy Hawkin's abstract expressionist pieces were displayed this ArtHop evening. They are fun and vibrant and make you smile. Aside from being one of the founders of the 2nd Saturday ArtHop, Troy is an amazing artist of a wide range, from jewelry to collage to sculpture to acrylics. You can find more information at www.hawkmanstudios.com about his own art as well as local artists and class listings. Troy is offering youth art camps this summer, which are in session now. There are 5 weeks left with several openings to sign your child up.

This giraffe started out as a barstool and then taken and sculpted by multimedia artist Elliott Rogers. His connection to nature and animals is his inspiration.

Elliott, shown at far left, discusses his 3D animal sculptures with the local "hoppers". He explains how natural it is for him to create in 3D versus depicting an object on paper. Elliott's unique style is a welcoming feature to this month's ArtHop.

Here is another view of the animal sculptures.

Rock Around the Clock, artist Howard Zeller

What a talent! This is Howard Zeller of Zeller Signs & Pinstriping. He has been creating murals and paintings on just about anything from a saw to a car for almost 50 years. Some of his work is detailed here on various surfaces.

This gorgeous car was on display for all Art Hoppers to view displaying Howards impecable pinstriping ability. This car has details both inside and outside of the car. It really was a piece of art and fun to see!

Artist and Poet, Jill Gardner

Here is Jill Gardner, a woman who studied at the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland and has been featured in many exhibits since 1988. Some of her mixed media collage and printmaking is on display here at the Tapas restaurant on Oregon Street.

Onlookers here enjoying Jill's art and reading some of her entertainingly funny and original poetry. You can see more of Jill's creations by going to www.jillgardnerarts.com.

‘Back For The Summer’, various artists featured at the Methodist Church

There was a beautiful array of artists' paintings on display at the Methodist Church in Redding. One of the them was Nancy di Bella whose painting is called "Floral Explosion". This was a favorite of mine with all the vivid colors...makes you happy inside.

Beautiful! This was another piece of art that I found stunning with the vibrant watercolors seen here in this painting called "Lassen" by Molly Cole.

This wall showcased all artists featured at this hop stop and was so well put together. Some of the E-Studio Artists include Julie Kaplan, Molly Cole, and Nancy di Bella.

Thank you again to both Adam Mankoski and Troy Hawkins for including me in their 2nd Saturday ArtHop evening this June.

It was a pleasure to mingle with such relevant artists in our local North State area.  The venues provide such inviting displays of each artists’ work and are so hospitable.

Another great success!  Thank you!

Kingdom Creations
~A Prophetic Jewelry Collection~

www.kingdomcreations.biz

One of the stops Saturday night was to see Kingdom Creations by Catherine King, assisted by Casey Weaver. The collection was largely jewelry, but also included some wall art pieces in the form of tiles with glass and wire work. So much to look at, much to admire, and treasures for everyone. Catherine King is pictured here.

Here is a nice sampling of Catherine's necklaces, pendants, and earrings.

If you look closely, the wall is decorated with tile art - each with their own theme.

Masterpiece tiara created by Casey Weaver. There are over 100 real pearls used in this delicate beauty.

The Studio Experience
www.thestudioexperience.com

Artist Michelle S. Young is featured at The Studio Experience in Redding. Her colorful paintings are a feast for the eyes. Forals are her specialty and come in many canvas sizes, ranging from the size of a coaster on up to 16x20's. Michelle's work is also found in Weaverville and her paintings have garnered her several awards.

Shirley Barone's paintings have graced our local studios as well as in Sacramento, including a showing that sold out. Shirley's work has awarded her quite a few accolades, placing first several times. This painting has now become a family favorite, The Matrix. We may need to grab this guy up!

Seen here are paintings by all 3 artists currently featured at The Studio Experience; Mickey Theobold, Shirley Barone, and Michelle S. Young. Mickey is masterful at landscape pieces. Her work has been published in books, articles, and magazines. She too is a recognized artist having receiving several awards, including first place. Feel free to explore more of their work at the web site listed above.

Shirley Valentine, written by Willy Russell & Directed by Russell Piette

What a treat it was to see actor Susan Daugherty this Saturday night. Us "hoppers" were treated to a scene from the show Shirley Valentine. She is delightful and charming. This show can be seen on April 23rd and 24th at the Riverfront Playhouse, tickets are available at Vintner's Cellar for $15 (festival seating). ~Great to meet you Susan!

Tegwin Matenaer

This is an extra special piece of Tegwin's work, Igo Green In Ono. It is extra special because she has donated it to the Renaissance Redding Tea taking placed on May 15th. The proceeds from the tea go to the Endowment Fund for the Arts. There will be a silent auction held for this work of art. I encourage you to attend the Renaissance Redding Tea to contribute to this fabulous event.

More pieces from Tegwin Matenaer. ~It was very nice to meet you Tegwin. Your work came to life as you obliged me with your stories. Thank you!

Redding ArtHop ~ February 13, 2010

February 24, 2010

The Redding City Ballet presents “Love Stories”

I brought my son, Danny, with me as my "date" to experience a little Redding culture. We were treated to a peek into 4 performances by the Redding City Ballet. This image was one of my favorites with such grace and beauty expressed on her face. I just love it!

"Romeo & Juliette" ~ Even without words, these dancers were able to convey love, joy, and then anguish through their dancing.

These 2 choreographed their own "Valentine" number. It was a delight to watch; playful and sweet. They even fed each other a chocolate at the end. Charming!

This one is for me ;) I love toe shoes. This ballerina was so kind and pointed her toes for me. I once dreamed of being a ballerina and dance in toe shoes!

Amy Jensen Photography

What a wonderful show! This artist is Amy Jensen who displayed her breathtaking photography at the offices of Jory Kaplan, MD and Disappearing Act. Despite the remote location, this show was packed with "hoppers" enjoying the beauty of Amy's photographic talent. As with much of the artists' work, her photographs will be on display the whole month of February and beginning of March.

The "hoppers" enjoyed each others' company (Amy right) while sipping wine and indulging in hors d'oeuvres. The party continued as onlookers discussed the beautiful architecture of the Sundial Bridge depicted in Amy's work.

A stunning photo of Amy's daughter, Ashley, named "The Whisper".

These photos were taken at The Palace of Fine Art in San Francisco. The artwork seemed custom made for this vintage/old world style room...I wanted to take them all home!

Jewelry by Bridget Chicoine

It was a gorgeous red theme in honor of Valentine's Day for the jewelry Bridget Chicoine brought to the ArtHop this month. With the black velvet tables and pop of red earrings and necklaces, the display really made a statement. As a collector of jewelry and hearts, I should have treated myself with some lovely pieces!

Cute glass earrings!

Mixed Media Artwork by Shirley Barone

Shirley Barone is an artist who uses a variety of mediums in her work, such as acrylic and paper collages. I had a delightful conversation with Shirley who mentioned Matisse and Pollack as inspirations for her work. She was a joy to meet.

This is Shirley here in the purple talking about how she arrived at the final stage of each of her pieces.

Paintings by Angie Persell

Angie is a talented young artist who uses reclaimed plywood as her canvas. She has a very modern & whimsical touch to her work as seen here on display.

I loved the fact that I was exposed to a whole new medium and I enjoyed her unique style. If you are shopping on Hilltop, stop by Infinite Designs 1189 Hilltop Drive to see Angie's work and see what Infinite Designs has to offer (etching, photos on stone, & more).

Here is a sampling of her work. BTW, thanks for the gum Angie :)

Diana Vader Photography

Stunning...vivid...captivating are a few words that come to mind with Diana's work. She is a wonderful photographer who has a passion for capturing everyday beauty and showing it to the world from her eye. It's like seeing things new again. The B/W staircase image was one of my favorites.

Diana is in this picture enjoying a cookie. As you can see here, she not only takes stills, landscape, and nature photography but she seems to have mastered portraits as well. Diana is a Redding photographer who takes senior portraits, family, children, and newborn portraits as well.

My son, Danny, had a favorite as well and it was of the large jellyfish in the center of this picture.

Glass Art by Didier Monath

This is the last post for this February ArtHop. I visited artist Didier Monath who does exquisite work with glass. The colors seem metallic and alive in his work. This piece was my favorite. Didier described it as a starburst in our galaxy.

Here is Didier (left) discussing his method with a "hopper" during his show. Notice his work behind them.

I want to thank Adam & Troy who put the Redding ArtHop together each and every month.  Everyone should experience this evening on the town with a date.  It is a fun night!
